Safari visual tabs

I am really annoyed when I open a new tab and I get all these visual choices. Same with opening the book marks menue The list is much easier to use for me. And in book marks the pictures take up scree space so the the list is much smaller and more difficult to scroll.

Is there any way to turn off these visuals?
