My wife and I have identical iMacs in our home office.

On her iMac, if she types ANYTHING into the address bar and hits Enter - nothing happens. In fact, anything she types into the address bar instantly disappears as soon as she hits Enter. As if she never typed anything.

However, if she clicks on one of her Favorites that works perfectly.

Things I've tried: Restarting Safari. Restarting the iMac several times. Software updates. Cleared all History and deleted all Cookies. Deleted all Safari Extensions. Went to Safari -> Preferences -> Search and unchecked every box.

Nothing helps. I assume I'm going to need to do a clean install of the OS or update to Mojave.

Help!

If musing & guesses are allowed...

On your wife's machine, does Firefox (or such) work?
On your wife's machine, does she have any Ad Blockers installed (not just extensions)? If so, remove them all and then what happens?

I'm not crazy about these desperte guesses, but it may get the ball rolling. And sorry if my help is not...

It sounds like it could be related to the safari smart search feature. You might want to look at that.
