Safari Won't Open...

So, strange thing happened today - I got home from work, came downstairs to my mac, and clicked on Safari in the dock.

And nothing happened.

So I clicked again. Ahh... there was the reassuring bounce from the dock. Until it stopped bouncing without opening.

For some reason or another, Safari will no longer start running on my computer! I reparied permissions, trashed the prefs, etc - to no avail. It's not working on other accounts on this computer either.

Any ideas on what to do? Btw, for what it's worth, I can access the iTMS just fine through iTunes... don't know if that will help diagnose the problem or not...
 
Is there anything interesting in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Safari.crash.log ?

there was one in my home directory (not the system-wide library). It was pretty complex, and I didn't understand any of it...

So, I moved it to a new location, and tried opening safari again - no beans. But it also didn't make a new crash log file... and the info for the old crash log had a last modified date of June 28th.

And no, no third party things here... I had pith helmet a long while back, and it made surfing so painfully sluggish that I was happy to get rid of it...
 
Although, now that you mention 3rd party plug-ins, last night I got myself up to date with flash player, because I needed it to play Lucky 7 online (www.trekbikes.com)... everything ran fine then - it quit and re-opened safari for the installation to finish, and all seemed well... I don't know if I quit and re-opened after that last night, so I can't really say if it's affecting things or not.

I just did the full macjanitor sweep, rotated all logs, etc... still won't open. Very strange. You can see it pop up for a brief moment in activity monitor, and then it just goes away...

I just saw that last one pop up while I wasn't doing anything... strange...

and there's still nothing in the safari log that it said it was writing too...
 
Any way for you to reinstall?
I know its frustrating...

I'd like to avoid it - when I got this mac (refurb), it came with panther upgrade CD"s, which require jaguar to be present to do an archive and install, however much sense that makes. So to do an archive/install, I'd have to backup to jaguar first, and then move back up to panther - and that's all bad. There's enough quirks from having an upgraded system to begin with (my help system showed 'welcome to os X.2! until I swapped the appropriate files from my second installation on another partition)...

the safari log finally has something in it. after seeing that my mac was trying to send something to that IP, I got a little freaked out, and unplugged my dsl modem. I tried opening safari again, and actually got the 'this application has unexpectedly quit' box, giving me a chance to submit feedback. and as soon as I did (plugged the modem back in to submit), the log file updated, and gave itself one entry. If you want, I can post the contents here, though it's lengthy...

This is what's it's saying when it doesn't log the error in the safari crash log -

anyone out there know what that means?

well, I can make it record the log 100%... as long as the ethernet is dead. no idea why, but it will only finish recording the log file, and not get that signal 5 error, if the dsl modem isn't hooked up. doesn't help much figure out why it's happening in the first place, but i've got to head to bed - I just picked up some new clipless pedals for my bike, and I was a little over-eager on the test run, and I'm pretty well whipped right now...

Ewww, that's saying that crashdump itself is croaking. You may have bigger problems than just a messed Safari.
 
okay, I'm downright ticked off.

Wondering why my ethernet connection made any difference at all, I cycled the modem.

Click on safari, and less than half a bounce, it's up and running. What the heck just happened? Why could an external peice of equipment cause that to fail? And why would it start when I restarted the modem, but not when the ethernet was disconnected? Wouldn't it do the same if I restarted (I did)?

So I'm more confused than when I started... but at least I've got safari back, right?

Yeah, the crashdump you posted shows Safari freaking out on a name lookup, which isn't too surprising if you pulled the plug :) So I'm not sure this dump is really telling much about the actual problem :(
 
my safari won't open either...

i tried to open safari 3 but it only jumped in the dock a few seconds and it closed again. i downloaded a new safari 3 but the same thing happened. what should i do? this is what the log said...

Try getting rid of that Speed Download Enhancer and any other Safari hacks, and see if everything goes a little more smoothly. If you really want the hacks and you can't find newer versions compatible with Safari 3, you may want to run the uninstaller inside the Safari 3 disk image so that you can go back to Safari 2.
 
i deleted the speed downloader just like you said and safari is working again! thank you so much for helping me! :D
 
I'm having the same problem. I downloaded updates yesterday, but didn't restart when it told me to. I turned my comp off and went bed. When I turned my macbook on today, Safari bounces once and nothing happens. When I right click the icon, it says Application Not Responding. I don't know how to see what versions I'm running, but I tried deleting the plist thingy, and I ran permission repairs. Also made another account with admin priveledges, and ran permission repairs from there. Everything worked before the update. I checked my crash logs and the crashes for today aren't listed. Please help this new Mac user!
