If i turned off icloud for imessages on my mac (keep it on for rest of my devices) and delete 12 gb of message attachments, will they also be deleted off icloud or only the mac that i turned off icloud messages on? i want to delete them from my mac but not from icloud

As long as you’re not planning to turn iMessage back on for the Mac, I suppose that would be okay. If you turn it back on, it’ll try to synchronize and “might” delete the items from iCloud?

The Help (help can be useful) for Messages says:

Turn off Messages in iCloud

You can turn off Messages in iCloud on all your devices or on your Mac only.
  1. In the Messages app

on your Mac, choose Messages > Preferences, then click iMessage.
  2. In the Settings pane, unselect Enable Messages in iCloud.
  3. Choose one of the following:
    • Disable All: Turns off Messages in iCloud on all your devices. Messages are no longer stored in iCloud and are instead stored on each device.
    • Disable This Device: Turns off Messages in iCloud on your Mac only. Messages on your Mac are no longer stored in iCloud; on any other device where Messages in iCloud is turned on, messages continue to be stored in iCloud.

So you have the choice of deleting everywhere or just on the Mac. Choose wisely!
