Safe to leave external HDD plugged into Airport at all times?

I plan on buying the base model RMBP. Since it doesn't have much storage, this seems like the most convenient solution. I have THIS hard drive. Is it safe to just leave it plugged in to my Airport station? Will it power down when not in use? Thanks for any help!
