The optical drive in my 2009 unibody macbook is busted (won't read any discs and spits them out). Is it safe just to remove it and make my computer a bit lighter?

Why not? Or you can put another HDD/SDD in the optical drive.

Safe, is a relative term..

Safe, is a relative term ~ if you are capable with tools, yes!! :)

Give 'er a Go, if the ~200 grams less will ease the pain on your arms!! :apple:

Sure go right ahead. Honestly though, the drive is extremely thin stamped aluminum sheetmetal and plastic, when I removed mine I could barely feel its weight in my hand.
