Safer way to backup contacts and calendar?

Is there a safer way to backup contacts and calendar without syncing?

I lost all my calendar events and contacts last night and I'm pissed!

Is there no way to confirm which way the mac and iphone is syncing? I would assume the latest info takes precedence. Nope.

So was wondering is there another way to backup that doesn't involve syncing. I don't want to risk losing all my data again. Very frustrated.

If you are using a Mac with Time Machine, you can get your info back.

make sure you use "export" or "backup" from inside Addressbook and ical. You can specify that sync reports if more than 5% of the data would change and then you have the chance to cancel the sync.
