I noticed this morning that my phone was hot after charging over night. I normally charge over night and haven't noticed this before. I can feel the heat through my otter box defender case. Should I be worried or will this be fixed with the software update? I feel like this is a safety issue with this phone because of all the complaints about the battery and heat.

The iPhone is designed to shut off if it goes above preset "safe" operating temperatures. Thick cases tend to hold heat, further exacerbating the problem (like your otterbox). My iPhone 4 has been running a little warmer since iOS 5, but not to the point it is uncomfortable to hold. I only use a bumper...
If you reach the unsafe temperature internally, it will look like this:

Thanks! I guess until I see that message then the phone is not too hot and is not a safety hazard.
