Safeway has announced that it is in the process of rolling out Apple Pay throughout October in the United States.

The grocery store chain shared the news through its Twitter account in response to a customer inquiry on Sunday.
Hi, thanks for asking. We are in the process of rolling it out through the month of October. Have a great day. - Safeway (@Safeway) October 1, 2017
Safeway has 912 grocery stores in the United States, with over 500 along the West Coast in California, Oregon, and Washington. The tweet did not specify which locations will begin accepting Apple Pay this month.

It's important to note that customer service representatives can sometimes be misinformed, so the tweet may be inaccurate.

Yesterday, however, a Reddit user said his local Safeway had just enabled contactless payments. He tried Apple Pay and said it worked.

MacRumors has reached out to Safeway for confirmation, including participating locations, and we'll update this article if we hear back.

Last month, grocery store chain ALDI announced it now accepts Apple Pay at all of its nearly 1,700 locations across the United States.

Some other grocery stores that accept Apple Pay in the country include select Giant Food, Wegmans, BI-LO, Food Lion, Save Mart, Shop 'n Save, Trader Joe's, Winn-Dixie, Whole Foods Market, and United Supermarkets locations.

Safeway also owns the Jewel-Osco grocery chain here in the midwest. Is Apple Pay accepted there or going to be rolled out to all of Safeway's branded chains?

Kroger also owns Food4Less and Marianos here in the Midwest. I'd sell my soul for them to add Apple Pay. Marianos is my favorite place to shop.

Nice to see Safeway doing this.

Jewel-Osco has been accepting Apple Pay (con-tactless payments) for a long time (not sure if it was before 2016, but they've been doing it for a long time). Its one of the many places (Meijer as well) I go, just because they accept it.

Safeway also owns Albertsons and Vons, both of which are ubiquitous in California.

This is great news for me personally, as I do a lot of shopping at a nearby Vons, as it ties in with the Just For U app and my gas rewards. I won’t keep looking like a goober forgetting whether it’s a chip or swipe terminal.

Now if only Kroger would get with it!
Go to Meijer’s instead. You can use Apple Pay at the register and directly at the pump!

See my suggestion regarding Meijer’s having Apple Pay at both the register and pump.

Kroger is the largest chain in the country. I think when they roll it out, all others will follow. I'd like to see them move their Kroger Plus card to apple pay like Walgreens did with their balance rewards.
Kroger successfully tested Apple Pay in Arizona a couple of years ago. Since then it has been radio silence. Inquiries result in “no plans to use it.”

Seek alternatives. From Costco, Kroger and Target, we moved a goodly part of our shopping to Meijer & Kohl’s.

Hope this includes Safeway's 3 stores in Florida. Safeway/Albertson's ACME Markets division in Philadelphia has accepted Apple Pay for some time. Kroger investment Lucky's Market has accepted Apple Pay since opening in Florida.

Meanwhile in Canada tap to pay was widely adopted prior to Apple Pay, which was integrated seamlessly almost everywhere immediately.

off topic but wow safeway long gone here in uk.
not heard that name in such a long time.
It's Morrisons since end of 2005 here in uk.

Completely different company... I shopped there in the UK since it was familiar to me being from the US, and I found out it was a licensed name or something but not really the same company. Well that's what I was told.

Safeway uk was a subsidiary of safeway America inc.
The uk side was merged into morrisons in 2005

quoted from wiki:

Safeway was a chain of supermarkets and convenience stores in the United Kingdom. It started as a subsidiary of the American Safeway Inc., before being sold off in 1987. ... Most of its 479 stores were rebranded as Morrisons, with others being sold off.

I would like to see this as well but I doubt it will happen any time soon. They have stopped building stores to focus on technology but no idea what that really means. The Amazon/Whole Foods deal and their reaction to it has dropped their stock price like a rock recently.

We do not have meijers where I live. Its kroger, publix, or walmart for groceries.
