Digging through this IPSW thing, I realized that the file for the iPhone 7 and 8 is usually the same exact file, even for the GPS and the Global versions of the phone.

I’ve compared several files from the iOS 15 family, e.g. iOS 15.4.1, and the IPSW file is the same for iPhone 7 and 8.

I’ve never read this anywhere, and I think it’s new information. Has anyone used an iPhone 7 IPSW to install on an iPhone 8? This could open the door for having the ability to downgrade from iOS 16 or 17 to the latest signed version of iOS 15 for the iPhone 7, at least on the iPhone 8.

Maybe I should give it a try installing the iPhone 7 iOS 15.7 IPSW on my iPhone 8…

It probably won't work, iTunes/Finder will still know that you've got an iPhone 8 connected and when it checks with Apple, it'll know that the IPSW file that you're trying to use is not signed for that device.

I don’t get the point of this trying, just download on the web or using 3u tools ipsw file for iOS 15.7 for iPhone 8 and you’re good to go. It is still signed and can be used :)
“Why you are looking to use ipsw file for iPhone 7 on 8?”
