So, having happy memories of SSD from my MBA 1.86Ghz SSD days, I thought I'd put a nice SSD into my new 13" MBP. Moving from Western Digital Scorpio Black (320GB 7200RPM), it definitely was a HUGE leap.

So here are my experiences with them, and please suggest me on other stress tests I can put on this drive :)

I hope my post can help anyone who's deciding between many SSD's.

0. Samsung MMDOE56G 256GB SSD Drive (MLC)

I got this SSD as a nice treat for myself... I usually shop to get rid of my stress away and investing in my MBP's performance looked like a good use of money. I bought this in South Korea (Korean WON is really crappy at the moment) so the price was about $735USD (KRW 940,000). And it was free shipping (yay)

And I read an article where they did a comparison between many SSD's, and this Samsung SSD came 3rd after Intel's X25-E and X25-M... So.. yeah..

The SSD looks so nice with brushed metal back and clean design.
It's not like I'll be able to see it from outside of the laptop, but er... yeah, it looks nice.

1. Installation

The physical installation of the drive went without a single problem, but I've noticed that the SSD fits a little tighter than my WD Scorpio Black did in the MBP.

After formatting it to be GUID and Mac OS Journal, OS X installation went really quickly and easily as well, I've had no problem installing/running all my application and the OS itself.

2. Performance

Boot up was REALLY fast. It took less than 25 seconds from pushing the power button to opening up MSN, Skype and Entourage (all of them are my default "open at login" items)
I'm pretty sure I'd shave a few seconds off if I set up my default open at login items to be disabled.

Opening apps is just as great. Safari opens up as soon as I click it, and MS Word, MS Excel opens up within 3 seconds.

I ran Xbench, write speed ranged from 170MB/s ~ 190MB/s, while read speed ranged from 175MB/S ~ 190MB/s.

I was kind of curious why I couldn't get near the advertised speed (READ 220MB/s, WRITE 200MB/s) but I didn't complain since it was a huge leap from the WD Scorpio Black :)

Here are my Xbench scores: (Drive only)

3. Conclusion

Pretty happy with my purchase, I'd recommend the drive to anyone who's looking for a mass storage SSD.
I considered purchasing OCZ Vertex and such as well, but living in South Korea at the moment, Samsung seemed to be a better choice (warranty, price and stuff)

I'll be willing to put the disk into tests if anyone can suggest a good benchmark solution.
