Can't seem to get a straight answer, forum posts usually say something like "bought the drive, works flawlessly" yada yada, but I really want to know if it is or isn't necessary to format the drive to HFS+ before installing Lion!
Yes or no? : /

New drives are generally formatted for windows and not OSX, that being the case you'll need to format it to HFS+ under Disk Utility.

So that is probably why you're hearing mixed messages

Thank you!
I've found a guide on how to do that, so I should be set for my drive arriving in a couple of days!

Internal Hard drives are never partitioned/formatted.

You have to choose a partition table, create your partitions and choose a file system before using them.
