My old 2011 is still working good. I had the motherboard/logic/video repair done 4 years ago or so, 2016-2017 and its still a nice unit. Sad that Apple won't support their own stuff any more. So I am going to install windows 10 and an 8TB Samsung. Anyone tried that? I know the 4TB SSD will work fine as I had that in another. But is there any silly firmware or Apple limit to the 8TB? I do mean direct Win 10 not bootcamp or with any Apple OS involved at all. 100% windows latest.

Thanks

In theory it should work. A lot of these issues came from the 2 TB / 4k sector stuff (many external chassis < 2TB can only handle drives up to 2TB for example)

since you already know 4 works fine, 8 should work as well. Also, if you dont need the CD/DVD drive, you can swap that out for another HD and continue booting off the 4 for the OS and 8TB for data\

Also, the OS is definitely capable of booting from 8TB. I do that already (have a install of high sierra for debug purposes on a 8TB)

How much are you paying for that 8tb SSD?
Not worth putting it into a 10-year-old Mac, in my opinion...

It is worth it because the specs on it, exceed the specs on most plastic junk, and it is the only all metal design that still is easy to add a slotted 2.5 drive. All the new stuff is either M.2 or soldered to the board. Besides I already own this and thus the drive is the only cost. $800

And I suppose you can always salvage that drive and use it for something else if the MacBook dies or you eventually replace it.
