Samsung 970 Evo performance and power consumption on MacBook Pro 2015.

Recently I have upgraded Samsung 970 Evo 500 GB to my (MacBook pro 13” Ratine Early 2015). I was in need of space, so I decided to give it a try, however after upgrading, I have seen dramatic battery drain, especially at ‘sleep time’. After careful observation, I have found some insights that might help other users to do the calculation before upgrading their Mac with Samsung 970 Evo.

Battery performance with Original-SSD.

Let’s talk about the real-life battery performance on Mac. My MacBook Pro Battery is 380 cycle with 93% capacity, great for everyday uses, I still get 8-9 Hours on battery uses with original Mac SSD. Sleep-time battery performance is great as well, which in real-time drain is (29 mAH or 0.04 Watts per hour). Means in 8 hours sleep, battery drain is 29 mAH x 8 Hours =322 mAH, which is about 2-4 % drain of my current battery, not that bad, I guess!

Battery performance with Samsung 970 Evo.

After couple of days with Samsung Evo 970, my observation is below, however I will be focus on battery performance only.

1. Heats up very fast compare to Original SSD.

2. Consume more power than Original SSD.

3. But Faster than Original SSD.

Let’s focus on battery performance, at sleep time the average battery consumption is (117 mAH or 1.4 Watts per Hour), means in 8 Hours, battery will drain 117 mAH x 8 Hours = 936 mAh, which is about 15 % drain in sleep time.

Just to be considered, MacBook Por early 2015 battery capacity was 6560 mAh but after 3.5 years later my Mac can hold maximum 6100 mAh. I guess that would be similar to most of the user, depending on cycle counts on their battery.
