Samsung is planning to launch a new program selling refurbished used versions of its smartphones as early as next year, according to sources who spoke to Reuters.

The Korean tech firm is seeking ways to sustain its earnings after the company posted its best profits for two years following a restructuring of its mobile lineup. With the smartphone market plateauing, Samsung hopes that selling the returned handsets as part of its upgrade programs will help it maximize cost efficiency and keep its operating margins above 10 percent, reports Reuters.

The discounted handsets are said to be coming to customers tied to upgrade programs in markets like the U.S. and South Korea, however there's no official word on how much the discount will be, or which countries the program is coming to.

Apple already sells used phones in several markets including the U.S., but was recently blocked from selling refurbished handsets in India, where high-end devices are beyond most buyers.

Reuters notes that an iPhone has a re-sale value of around 69 percent of its original price after about one year from launch, while Samsung's flagship Galaxy sells for 51 percent of the original price in the U.S. market, according to BNP Paribas.

The program is likely to attract customers previously put off by the high price of Samsung's high-end smartphones, some of which cost up to $800. Selling the used phones in growing markets like India could also be a big hit for Samsung, while offering them in China could could help the company prevent market share encroachment by Chinese rivals, many of which offer low-cost alternatives.

I haven't had much experience with Samsung's refurb quality. I know Apple refurbs are great and would highly recommend them to anybody on the fence about purchasing one.

Does anybody have first-hand experience with Samsung refurbs? Good or bad? Thank you for any feedback you can provide! :)

Didn't ever hear of Samsung Refurb here in Europe. Guess it'll be some new experience

Kinda makes sense given MR reported on Samsung's earnings, plus as Apple's biggest rival...

But the funny part is that Android sites such as Droid-Life could care less about Apple news. The only time you would see it is when Apple launches new devices. Same goes with androidpolice and androidauthority. They focus only on Android and when you even mention that you own a iPhone they look at you funny.
But then again many of those folks own non-Samsung devices which this site ignores.
Android is such a big piece of the pie it's now Samsung fanboys vs other Android fanboys.

Or Apple has run out of ideas.....for MR to leak. Cant blame a rumour site given what has been released in the last 24 months .... Problem is Apple and not MR.

I'm sure MR would prefer to post Apple news....

This 100%. To some of those guys, Samsung is equivalent to, and just as bad as Apple. It's funny and it mirrors the fanboy arguments between iOS/Android factions. They all have two things in common: fanboys of any ilk are universally annoying and overwhelmingly useless in a discussion.

In Android world the battle is why buy a Samsung when the Chinese brands are hundreds of dollars less and run the same OS and use many of the same parts. The battle is real there because the phones are much more similar than an IPhone.

In all honestly the Note 7 is not all that. My little iPhone SE feels more solid than my Galaxy S7 but Macrumors won't capitalize on that fact. Instead we have Samsung news on how they will make more money selling refurbs. Where's the Apple devotion here on Macrumors? I got to lay part of the blame on Tim Cook because while profits look great the user base is seriously declining big time. How much profits can you make when you user base is approaching single digits?
I just know that these next 2 iPhone's better be hits because Apple may end up like Microsoft of the mobile world. What ever Android fan Apple won when the iPhone 6 came up is now looking to jump ship back to Android due to the lackluster iPhone 6SS with missing headphone jack.

It wouldn't if Apple wouldn't focus on watch bands and balloons in iMessage.

A few helpful MacRumors links that contain lots of alternatives to Android, Samsung, Watch Band and iMessage Balloon articles:

Pro Tip: scan the headline, if it doesn't interest you move on to something else.

This site posts more Apple related news than it ever has. It also posts more tutorials, reviews and competitor news in line with Apple's enormous growth and moves into new market segments.

Pro tip : Drop into an Apple Store . I've never seen them so empty , so reflects nicely what is happening on MR. Try it this week...

The focus of this site is still overwhelmingly on Apple. However, I appreciate reading industry wide news and trends as well. Sites that focus too narrowly on one platform miss how other players influence each other.

I made a similar statement in another thread last week. Samsung has a real struggle. The lower tier experience is very similar to the premium experience. The small nuances that separate the experiences are becoming increasingly smaller. Fortunately for Apple, there is no iOS competition.

Where's the Apple devotion here on Macrumors?
Honestly, I would drop this site like a bad habit if it became sycophantic and insular. I don't think we need another appleinsider. Even with that, appleinsider reports on Apple competitors and industry news that may not be directly related to Apple. It's just the rabid fanboyism in the forums that make that site unattractive to me. I hope MR never becomes anything like that.

Agreed, it's not like supporting a team in sports, why does anyone have to pick a side? I use both iOS and Android devices as they satisfy different needs. Say anything negative though on either side and you get labelled as a troll.

As a consumer the only side I am on is mine.

One thing that people forget is that this a site devoted to one company, while Android and Windows sites are relevant to several companies.

In the Android camp, there are new phones and tablets released by Samsung, HTC, LG, One Plus, Motorola, etc. throughout the year.

Same with the Windows camp. Dell, HP, Acer, Razer, Microsoft, ASUS, Gigabyte, Lenovo, etc. are releasing new hardware all the time. Even better for the Windows camp, PCs are a lot more upgradeable and are first to get new hardware from Intel, Nvidia, and AMD. That shiny new GTX 1070 is useless to 99% of Mac users and is thus irrelevant to Apple news.

Being focused only on Apple, when Apple has been stale for the past couple of years it's no surprising MR has to resort to making articles about competitors. Especially given that page views is how MR makes money.

It wouldn't if Apple wouldn't focus on watch bands and balloons in iMessage.

Your post about Watch bands doesn't even relate to the article. We can add your Watch band comment to the Wasteland of the other 1000 Watch band comments.

Back on topic, I personally like to read other competitors news that may or may not impact Apple. And it's nice that MacRumors is the only site I truly visit. Being I do not have to go to multiple sites to read re-hashed articles.
