looking for either a ~256gb or ~500gb SSD

are there better (faster read/write SSDs) than these?

i have an early 2011 MCP. 2.7cpu, 8gb Ram. i assume my SATA drive can handle any SATA III?

Yes, your MBP supports SATA III so any SSD will work fine.

Here is a speed comparison of the two drives you mentioned and they are pretty close. Honestly, unless you are using testing software, you are not going to be able to tell the difference between just about any drive you can buy today.

A newer drive that is priced competitively is the Crucial MX100. Take a look at the reviewers remarks at the end of this article.

All in all, I have nothing negative to say about the MX100. With the performance and feature set, combined with pricing that basically doubles the amount of storage you get for your dollar, it's an absolute no-brainer. Unless you are an enthusiast or professional with a heavy IO workload, the MX100 is currently the drive with the best bang for the buck in the market by far.
