Samsung today announced that it will hold its first Galaxy Unpacked event of 2023 on Wednesday, February 1, unveiling new flagship smartphones that will directly compete with the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max from Apple.

Like Apple, Samsung has a regular release cycle for its smartphones, and new Galaxy models come out in the spring. This year, we're expecting the Galaxy S23 lineup.

Rumors so far suggest that the new S23 models will adopt the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip from Qualcomm, which is the chipset that will support Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Satellite feature. Snapdragon Satellite is similar to Apple's Emergency SOS via Satellite iPhone 14 function, and Qualcomm is partnering with satellite company Iridium to allow Android users to contact emergency services when WiFi and cellular connections are unavailable.

Notably, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip will be used worldwide, with Samsung no longer opting for separate Exynos chips for devices sold in Europe and other countries. The specific chip that Samsung is using has an overclocked GPU, according to leaked Geekbench benchmarks. Based on those benchmarks, the Snapdragon chip Samsung is using will not be as fast as the A16 in the iPhone 14 Pro models.

Samsung's high-end S23 Ultra could feature a 200-megapixel wide-angle camera, an upgrade from the 108-megapixel version in the S22, with more modest 50-megapixel cameras for the S23 and S23+. Apple's iPhone 14 Pro models are equipped with a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera.

As for design, there will be no major changes to the S23 lineup, and the S23 Ultra will look similar to the S22. Display improvements are a possibility, as are updated fingerprint sensors and new color options.

We often pay attention when new Galaxy models come out because it gives us an idea of what Apple's competitors are up to and how the latest Android phones measure up to Apple's iPhones. We'll be sharing Samsung's news on February 1, and will also have some comparison videos pitting Samsung's new smartphones against Apple's flagship lineup.

For those interested in one of Samsung's S23 smartphones, there's already a reservation page available that provides a $50 credit for the pre-order of a single device or a $100 credit when pre-ordering two devices. Samsung's reservation system does not charge automatically, requiring only a name and an email address to reserve devices. Credits will be able to be redeemed when pre-ordering after the devices debut.

I wonder if they improved power management. Because I had a less than stellar experience on the S22 Ultra. Maybe I can trade my S22 Ultra for it, lol. Since it's now brick in my room having gone back to Iphone 13 Pro max.

They supposedly moved to use TSMC this year which has better power efficiency vs last year's Samsung semiconductor.

Maybe I’m alone on this, but I’m curious for the S23 screen. Namely, if they are able to use PWM above 2000Hz like it is rumored, and if it’s high enough at low brightness.

Hopefully that “flicker free” technology comes to the iPhone screens at some point, whether it is from Samsung or from BOE manufacturers.
I’m able to use an S22 Ultra comfortably while struggling with iPhones, even some LCD ones possibly due to temporal dithering or some other factor. I tried an S22 in a store and that wasn’t quite as comfortable for some reason. I also had issues with Pixel 7 Pro and the Pixel 6 Pro I own.

I’ve read that the pwm rate is very consistent on the s22 Ultra. It may be the consistency that enables me to use it. I can use my 14 Pro Max but only for short durations, about 40 minutes. Then I start to suffer discomfort like headaches and dizziness and eye strain.

I wish you luck with the S23 Ultra if you decide to try it.

The spur to competition is great. I do think Apple though tends to be more honest than Samsung. Tends to. For instance the new pro 48 mp sensor really does provide extra results when used carefully - e.g. proraw, and you know what you are doing. But 200 mp seems to be defying the laws of physics on such a small sensor. Not even full frame boast such high numbers. Heck, even medium formats are only rumoured to be going there in the next year.
Interesting they were able to get the satellite features so quickly. They must all be watching each carefully years in advance.
But aside from their annoying marketing, Samsung makes great products, and keeps apple on its toes.

No, no, I’m afraid I’m locked into Apple’s ecosystem, and not just because of iCloud services, I use it in conjunction with an iPad and technologies like AirDrop are essential for me.

I’m happy with my iPhone 8, but I guess I’ll keep trying each new generation until I find some easier on my eyes. If Apple discontinues the 2022 SE I’ll run to get one because that will probably be my only chance to keep using an iPhone.

I like your new, cozy, profile picture.

Yeah I totally understand. I’m locked in due to iMessage. With my family, I can move on to Signal or some other texting option, but I’m still involved with a lot of parents at my kids school and they’re all on iMessage. I used to have some green bubble parents I texted with, but they either went to iPhones or have drifted away when their kids went to different high schools.

I’m getting closer to being able to exit the eco system though. Still, I’m very fond of my Apple Watch so…lol…Apple does seem to have me. I’m going to try a Samsung watch again if I can get a good deal on one when I preorder an S23 Ultra. I’m lucky to be able to have an Android phone line and an Apple one.

My favorite part of new Samsung product releases are the inevitable commercials that bash Apple products. Those ads are so cringeworthy and off-the-mark that they end up being hilarious. Samsung self-owns itself over and over and over with those things. 🤣
Their commercials are the worst. Except for the one that aired in 2016 and introduced me to the music of Lucius.

Those kind of commercials are fun to watch. They add a bit of entertainment comedy to the mix.
