Samsung has a new monitor sale this week, which includes discounts on 4K and 5K Samsung monitors. The popular ViewFinity S9 5K Smart Monitor and Smart Monitor M8 are both discounted during this sale, but you'll also find sales on storage, audio, TVs, smartphones, and home appliances.

As with previous sales, the highlight of the new event is the 27-inch ViewFinity S9 5K Smart Monitor for $999.99, down from $1,599.99. At $600 off this is a solid second-best price on the 2023 display, which has a matte display, modular 4K SlimFit camera, and support for Thunderbolt 4.

Samsung's 27-inch Smart Monitor M8 is also being discounted during this sale, available for $399.99 in Warm White, down from $699.99. This is a 4K smart monitor with a design that looks similar to the iMac line, and this is a solid second-best price.

R.I.P. ViewFinity S9 5K full price buyers.

How do you feel about MB buyers seeing pretty much weekly sales on latest MBs (launched SINCE this particular monitor was released), iPad buyers seeing pretty much weekly sales on iPads, etc?

Another view of the same: wow. Those wanting a 5K monitor with most of the "stand options" included can get in on the Apple "ideal" 5K "retina" resolution for under $1K for a NEW (not refurb) monitor with a superior webcam that is also removable vs. having to lean on the "piece of tape" approach for those worried about who is watching. And bonus: it has TWO video inputs so they can readily use it with things beyond the walled garden too. And bonus #2: it comes with a remote and its smarts can run popular apps, so it can stand in as a "little TV" too.

Half empty vs. Half full? To switch a viewpoint only requires adding or removing a bit of the liquid in the cup.

I feel exactly the same about those launch day (week) buyers when it's guaranteed you have to wait just a month or two (sometimes a week or two) to get it with a discount.

Reviews are horrible for these
I bought an S9 in February. While the picture is definitely nice, the monitor has been nothing but trouble... and Samsung is horrible about "service."

My brand-new $1600 screen doesn't wake properly about 80% of the time - I have to fiddle with the (inconvenient) power button, plug and replug the Thunderbolt cable, chant the magic words to summon the Invisible Swordsman, and put my elbow in my ear to make it light up most of the time. It also developed bright horizontal and vertical lines after less than two months of use. Contacting Samsung for service was an exercise in absolute frustration - two solid hours on the phone with people just to get a service ticket made (their website to do so left me in a circular non-help holding pattern).

Samsung flat refuses to replace my screen (purchased directly from them). Instead, they insist on servicing it, and do NOT provide packing or shipping materials to do so. And... to ship an expensive screen across the country, they provide a UPS Ground shipping label... 9 days in transit, then (today) I finally get a receipt that they received it and need 4 working days to service it... then another 9-10 days to ship it back? Wow - almost 4 weeks to "take care" of a brand new, expensive screen. Whatever the definition of "customer service" is, Samsung is a master class in the opposite.

It always seemed weird to me to build a smart TV system into a monitor when you likely have a computer already attached to it.
I have a different Samsung monitor but with the same smart TV function.
I used it exactly ZERO times.

I have two Samsung Smart Monitors, one in basement and one in first floor. I switch between the rooms, depending on the temperatures and my mood and just take my notebook with me.

My wife used to take her iPad for exercises to the basement. Now she just uses the smart monitor without any additional device for her excercises. The same goes for my kids with their Samsung phones.

And whenever we have guests, they sleep in basement and use the smart monitor as YouTube, TV, Netflix, Prime Video and other apps.,

It really depends on your specific use-case. We use the Smart monitor features almost on a daily basis.

Yeah, Samsung is horrible. I bought a Bespoke Jet Vacuum (great device, BTW), and it was missing some accessories that both the website and the sales agent said (in writing) come with it (e.g., a spare battery).

I contacted Samsung CS (what they call "e-Commerce"). Everyone I spoke to in e-Commerce insisted it was the responsibility of Technical Support to fix this, and transferred me there, and Tech Support insisted it was the reponsibility of e-Commerce, and transferred me back. I spoke to 11 different people, including supervisors. It was like they were playing tennis and I was the ball.

Essentially, this is just a foreign call center that Samsung has contracted to do CS, and none of them have any actual knowledge of the product (they're just reading from scripts), or of how to fix issues (or, I suspect, the authority to actually do so). That's not the fault of the CS personnel--it's the fault of Samsung for outsourcing CS to whatever company gives them the lowest bid.

The solution, of course, is the same as it always is: Stop complaining to Samsung, and instead complain to an authority Samsung won't ignore. I could have filed a complaint with the FTC, but in this case I thought I'd get a quicker resolution by filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. That got an immediate response from an actual Samsung USA employee, a Tier 3 Executive Case Manager in their Executive Escalations Support Group. And, unlike those in the call center, he took ownership of my case and promised to resolve it. He still hasn't figured out how to get me the the parts, but he emails me once/week to say he's working on it. My BBB Case Manager said that if he doesn't resolve it, I should email her.

Good for you then! What's funny is that before I purchased that monitor that feature was one of the reasons that outweighed this monitor against the other one. I'm writing this because if you think this is a necessary feature, it may turn out to be completely unused by you and other monitors may have better other parameters.

This is a much better value than Apple display.
It really isn't, watch the reviews. The speakers and camera are much worse than on the ASD, S9 is also matte - once you go glossy it's hard to go back to matte screens. Unless you're getting S9 for much less than ASD there's really no point. You can get ASD on some discounts too.

Thought about getting one of these Samsung 5K displays to use as a 2nd monitor but I’ll pass after reading these reviews. No wonder they’re always $600 off. I paid an arm and a leg for my nano etched Apple Studio Display, but its been rock solid. I use it for my business so I can’t afford downtime and its never failed me in nearly two years of use. Just waking up instantly from sleep without issues is so worth paying the heavy price lol.

heard they are collecting data, they don't want to make dumb monitor.
don't like fancy features in display (including Apple display), i want dumb TV & monitor.
still using 2 thunderbolt displays @ work and home.

I can only confirm. The internal firmware is horrible, both the GUI and control. It does work with Samsung phones, but other devices from other brands not so much. Turning a Samsung TV off and on via the HDMI port often fails, milage does vary per model/brand device though.

And service... in case of any Samsung device it is usually better to do business with a real store instead and let them handle the replacing/repairing.

That is 100% correct. They do collect (your) data. That's why "Smart" TV's are cheaper than the "dumb" models, because there's more money to milk from data collecting and app makers. The data mining is mainly used for more advertising that it shoved on your screen. App makers that want their app on the Samsung platform have to pay a serious fee too, especially for "the front row". LG and others do the same thing btw. And these contracts are horrible - you'd think you have control over your own app or TV, nope.

That Samsung is a way way better value than Apple's offering.
Yes... its cheaper, but less value.

If it is functional. My personal experience with both this screen and Samsung has been absolutely terrible.
As it is with almost all screens. A buddy of mine replaced his Samsung HD TV with a newer 4K model. Again... the picture quality is horrible. With factory defaults the colour accuracy is so way off and not every model can be calibrated to get it right.

In my experience the software updates will quickly run dry and every online app will start to have issues or even stop working. Our AppleTV's from 2017 are still working perfectly whereas the 2022 "smart" TV my relatives use was showing problems with several apps after barely two years. So they've moved to the set-top box from the cable company.

I have to say, we do have one "smart" 4K TV from Panasonic in our house, but I turned off the smart stuff very quickly. I found out with the smart stuff on the TV consumed 20 Watts(!!!) of power when the TV was turned off (standby mode). Our AppleTV 4K doesn't even burn that much power when in active mode - it consumes around 3 Watts when its playing a 4K movie. So I turned everything "smart" off in the Panasonic and that reduced the standby power consumption to less than 1 Watt (as it should).

A "dumb" screen is always better. And indeed, when running a business any downtime due to stupid issues or failing equipment can cost more money. Besides... Samsung is "low budget" for basic consumers who don't mind to replace stuff more often.
