Another week, another case of the Samsung S9 5k 27" Viewfinity being reduced to almost half price in the US. Meanwhile, it's still full price in the UK and the only reason I'm not buying four or five of these for our office is that I know they're keeping the price artificially high here compared to the US so as a potential and willing customer, I'd feel like I'd be being mugged if I bought them now.

It’s crazy that they launched the monitor at the same price point as the studio display (1600$) and now it’s down to 350$ 🤣

Can’t be that good in the end.

Very happy studio display customer here btw!

I believe you are confusing S9 vs. S8.

But standard practice for Samsung (and non-Apple tech makers in general): launch new at market pricing and then- over time- work the price down. When it gets to closeout level, it will be available for as much as 40%+ off. It has nothing to do with quality or demand- just normal business practices.

I managed to time the purchase of my Samsung TV at closeout: retail when launched over $6K, I paid $3200 for it. In between those extremes, it had many sales testing demand at $4999, then $4499 and so on. It was highest-rated TV at the time and has been a fantastic TV since I've owned it.

Apple- on the other hand- locks the price for life of device, even as the tech inside ages and cost (to Apple) shrinks. Those of us buying ASD now are likely much more profitable than those who bought it at launch. Shareholders rejoice! 💰💰💰

The 5K display at $899 is very tempting. I want to pull the trigger on 2 of them and test it as a replacement for my 5k2k LG...

$350 for a 4K smart monitor is actually genuinely tempting... I can feel my wallet lightening already. 😩💸

Every time this Viewfinity goes on sale I repeat the ritual: Lament that there’s no HDMI input, so the smart TV features lose relevance when my game console can’t join the party. Then I look up the reviews and see the quality control issues. And remind myself why I didn’t bite last time.

In Europe they also keep the prices high. Currently the base Apple Studio Display is €1749 == $1900 vs Samsung's €1299 == $1411, tax included. In US Apple Store, the ASD starts at $1599. Their high price is still competitive vs ASD in Europe, and/or their game is the US market.

And I just do not get why the ViewFinity S9 5K Smart Monitor is so popular… its all plastic and absolutely not that good (color wise) I had to return mine while the color, even after calibration, was and stayed so bad… for home user maybe, but professional no way
I doubt any professional would use ANY Samsung display of any kind. I love them, as a consumer, but I know many creatives and won't even dare suggest they use any of my 4 monitors/TVs at home. Samsung has an incredibly consistent color calibration philosophy that you'll find even in their very expensive smart fridges. I guess it's kind of akin to Apple, and how they also have the same Philosophy for as natural tone as possible across all of their screens. Other less popular brands don't do that. Like Asus for example, I know a colorist who uses a professional grade monitor from them.

I have the previous 43” model and I LOVE it. It works great as A TV and a monitor. I also got it when it was on sale for a really low prize.

For the current price, it’s a pretty good monitor.

I’m hoping they eventually release an OLED model.

Edit: Sorry, I’m referring to the M7.

I have the 32" M8, and while it's no Studio Display, it's very nice for the money. I paid $375 for it, and it's been just fine.

Problem with that S line is that Samsung cannot get it through their heads that people want a monitor that behaves like a monitor, not a "smart monitor" that also wants to be a TV/streaming device.

The idea COULD work IF Samsung allowed you to force the thing to behave as a monitor and not anything else. But it's like an over-friendly puppy; not matter what settings you give it, it keeps popping out of monitor mode and asking " would like me to stream some content for you??? would you like me to act as your home hub???"
NO. NO NO NO!!! Just calm the f**k down, go back to being a monitor, and stop interrupting me once a week!!!

Do not buy this thing, no matter the price. The hassle of the random, uncontrollable interruptions to your work flow is just not worth even zero dollars.

Anyone with both the studio display and S9 can chime in here? How do they compare.

My main concern with S9 is the matte display, after using apple's iMac all glass display i will never go back to a matte display monitor as a primary. Does anyone know if the S9 is really full matte like the dell UltraSharp etc..or is it still glass but slightly less reflective.

I really dont understand why samsung didn't just make it all glass like studio display especially since that's their main competitor for this monitor. And in general, why all the brands make their monitor matte instead of all glass, super annoying.

Somehow I doubt that an originally 1,599 panel is that different from the Apple Studio Display. This seems like quite an exaggeration.

Before going for this monitor check reviews and comparisons with ASD. You may not go for it even with a lower price due to poor speakers and matter screen.

The Samsung website is almost unusable on my iPad due to 1/3rd of the horizontal display being a static panel and the remainder of the content designed for desktop. Can’t they figure this out in current year?

Or you can see it otherwise. Samsung will probably come out with a modern successor while Apple is milking its loyal customers with old tech till the last drop. You can be assured Samsung will make successors. For Apple’s aging studio display it begs the question.

So you praise Samsung for something you think they might do, while bashing Apple because you think they might not do something. Got it.

I praise Samsung for lowering the price for older tech. I bash Apple for still asking the premium price for old tech. Maybe you don’t understand.

So why is everyone comparing it with the apple display…. Apple and oranges
