This is a strange problem. I purchased a new Samsung LCD TV. I connected my MacBook via mini DVI-to-DVI adaptor and HDMI-to-DVI cable. Laptop monitor flashes as if it is communicating with TV, but picture does not appear on TV and a representation of the Samsung monitor does not appear in the Display configuration utility.
However, if I connect my wife's MacBook in the same manner, with the same adaptor, everything works fine. If I connect my son's PowerBook via DVI to DVI, it works fine. My MacBook is a few months older than my MacBook. Could they have upgraded the firmware somehow on hers?

I feel that I probably have a software problem since the adaptor works with my wife's MacBook. I have connected my laptop (the one that doesn't work with the Samsung) to a variety of external displays in the past and have a number of calibrated display configurations in the Display utility. I would like to reset the Display utility configuration file, but I cannot find a way to do that. In fact, the configuration files are not visible in Finder.

Anyone have any ideas here? I appreciate your help. I really need to use the TV as an external monitor!
