Samsung kicked off a new sale on computer monitors this week, including a match of the all-time low price on the 27-inch ViewFinity S9 5K Smart Monitor. You can get this display for $999.99 on Samsung's website, down from $1,599.99. Amazon is matching this sale.

This is a massive $600 discount on the Smart Monitor, which features a matte 5K display, modular 4K SlimFit camera, and support for Thunderbolt 4. The monitor is a good (and cheaper) alternative to Apple's Studio Display. The last time we tracked this deal was about one month ago, so if you've been waiting for a solid markdown on the Samsung display, now is definitely the time to buy.

In addition to the ViewFinity display sale, Samsung has a few other monitor discounts right now, which we've listed below. You can also find other Samsung products on sale this week, including offers and savings on Galaxy smartphones, watches, and tablets.

At this price, it does seem like a compelling alternative to the Studio Display. 5K panel, similar color gamut, Thunderbolt connectivity, and you even get a height-adjustable stand included. Matte coating, too, if glare bothers you. And, if you like to connect multiple devices — like a gaming console — this should be convenient.

Tradeoffs: Build quality kinda sucks, speakers sound like junk, and that top-mount webcam prevents the use of a light bar on top of the monitor (if that's your thing). If something goes wrong, you've gotta deal with Samsung support, for better or worse. And there's the lack of built-in macOS integration/control (although there are third-party apps that usually fix that.)

Don't forget superior webcam, fully removable web cam, more than one video input (so you can- say- recreate bootcamp by also attaching an actual PC vs. hoping ARM Windows emulation will cover all such needs), run apps on it to make it double as a little TV, use the remote for that last one, etc.

As a daily Apple Studio user I wish I'd gotten this instead. The Samsung's webcam at least can't be worse.
I paid $1,000 for my studio display, bought from a friend. What about the Samsung is better than the studio? Maybe some controls, as the SD has no buttons, but I’ve been really happy with mine. What am I missing?

Why did you leave off the trade offs in your reply?

Do you mean the nano texture?
No, regular glass. The panel has horrible light distribution/uniformity. I think all units have it, but people don't see it when they don't know it. That's why all Ads and YouTubers use these colorful wallpapers when testing it, because it's noticeable when scrolling websites and pdfs with white background. Apple ships junk with this product. Its the single reason I still stick with my Eizo <1k monitor from the last decade.

You might want to try adjusting the lighting. I use mine in an office with ok-ish lighting and it's pretty decent for Facetime/Zoom calls. It's a bit grainy in low light, but for video calls I've never found it to be a problem.

I sent back 4 studio displays because they all had massive dirty screen effect. An absolute quality low point from Apple. yet I will not buy this plastic version.
Goodness! That's unfortunate. Did you end up with a good one or did you give up altogether? I have been delighted with mine. The main issue I have is that I want a second monitor, but every non-Apple display I have tried looks 'off' when sat next to the ASD. I'm hopeful Apple will eventually sell a 30" option for less than the ProDisplay XDR - I'm not holding my breath over this though...

Just goes to show the profit margin they are getting if they can afford such a big discount.
When I worked in retail, a lot of the products sold for about 2x the wholesale price. And of course the wholesale price has to be higher than the manfacturer's actual cost (or they'd be losing money).

On eBay since beginning of the year for $670-750 open box (sometimes even new). The only deal breaker for me is the lack of glossy. If it had that, I would have bought 2 of them. Still going the Apple route.

Waiting for the magical $1500 for glossy tilt + height.
