I just got a T5 to use for Time Machine backups. It seems to work fine, but the Samsung software to update the device does not recognize the T5. Am I missing something, or is the software not compatible?

This is my first SSD. So there is no updating them like the software seemed to suggest?

I have had problems with T5s on Macs. From what I can tell, there is nothing you can do about it, since you can't even update the firmware. I suspect a firmware issue that has gone unfixed by Samsung. I gave up and switched to a SanDisk SSD.

Well, hopefully I will not run into any problems. This is only for data backup so...

I have a couple of T5 drives which have had firmware updates; unfortunately Samsung provides no detail as to what the updates may have fixed.
There is a new universal version of the Samsung software (version 1.6.8) available on Samsung's website which is M1 compatible.
