ASD Copy

Really, you couldn't even make it past the thread title without throwing shade?

They are both 27" 5K monitors with silver/aluminum enclosures. That's about where the similarities end.
The S9 has the following which the ASD does not:
  • Thinner bezels
  • Multiple inputs
  • Integrated VESA mount
  • Stand that is tilt, height, AND rotation adjustable
  • Wireless AirPlay target display
  • Detachable camera
  • Thunderbolt 4
  • Functions as a smart TV without needing a computer or dongles
  • Removable power cable

Even if you're 100% Team Apple and would never consider purchasing a Samsung monitor, this S9 being released is a GOOD thing. Competition raising the bar is what spurs Apple to innovate, and we all benefit from that. 👍

While I want to see what the S9 brings to the table, I am drifting more and more towards the Kuycon G27X since I really want a glossy display with a bonded glass front like the iMac 5K and Apple Studio Display, but I need to be able to use it with a Mac mini (Pro) and Windows PC without having to swap input cables.

And if you think the S9 is a clone of the Apple Studio Display...

Still no word on a US release date. Seems it may price close to the Studio Display, at which point, I'm not sure why I'd go with this over that.

My one issue with the Studio Display is that you can (easily) connect it to only one computer at a time. The S9 would solve that problem and with a 5K panel to boot, but it's matte (plus whatever issues reviews might eventually reveal).

Has anyone heard of "Wireless dual screens" using Apple Airplay?
If so, could this mean a triple 5k setup using 1xTB4 + 2xAirPlay?

Have you tried airplay? It's the laggiest most awful thing ever. Basically only good for displaying static images like a presentation. If you want triple 5K, just go with a Max chip in either a MBP, Studio or I guess Pro.

I've just picked up a MBP with M2 max. I was hoping to avoid plugging in 3 cables and using all the ports.

Did anyone see the Youtube short from Samsung showing potentially this monitor and says coming in June? We can hope! 🤞

Can't daisy chain ASDs. And I'm unaware of a TB doc that can handle more than 2 ASDs.
Right-- though since some thunderbolt docks can accommodate 2 5k @ 60hz; he could get down to 2 connections instead of 3. (I imagine this is basically a function of the bandwidth needed to drive those 5k displays-- just not enough to drive 3 off one thunderbolt 4 port.)

found it here with prices starting at 1,356.90 swiss francs which is almost $1500: https://www.toppreise.ch/preisvergleich/Monitore/SAMSUNG-ViewFinity-S9-S90PC-LS27C902PAUXEN-p729501

edit: retail price is apparently CHF 1,599.00 which clocks in at around USD 1,759.07 right now.
one thing to consider is that Apple price vs consumer price sees very little variance over time. I think if you wait 6 months you will see the Samsung monitor will already see some discount pricing

Very interested in this monitor. I have an LG 5K which is fine, but I'd like to add a second monitor. If the Dell 6K ever gets a big sale I wonder if a single 32" might be more convenient (for me) than dual 27".

Only 1 AirPlay / SideCar at a time is possible.
Besides this, you really wouldn't want to be using AirPlay with a 5K monitor unless you're just watching a video. Someone already mentioned lag, but bandwidth is a more pressing problem.

If you're buying a 5K monitor, you're probably interested in high quality text and images. This resolution requires a lot of bandwidth. The massive wikipedia article on DisplayPort has a nice table about half way through showing various resolutions and how much bandwidth they need uncompressed. This information is applicable for USB-C as well, not just because it needs to transfer the same information but also because USB-C / Thunderbolt is operating in DisplayPort mode behind the scenes to do video output. The chart confirms that the DisplayPort mode necessary for 8-bit color at 5K 60hz is 25.92 Gbit/s, and 10-bit color needs 38.68 Gbit/s. With thunderbolt 4 being 40Gb/sec, that's enough for the full quality uncompressed video but your typical local Wifi connection is going to be roughly 40 times slower than that. AirPlay is compressing the video in a manner comparable to streaming video. Also AirPlay is limited to 1080p / 2K. Anything higher than that is going to be streamed at 1080p and blown back up to your display at viewing time. If you just want 1080p you're better off getting a normal monitor.

I've been waiting for this to come out since January. I have a 4K 24in display right now and I would be happy with a 2nd one of what I have, but the particular one I have (Asus) hasn't been sold in years and has some issues with separation of deep blacks. While I don't expect the Samsung to be perfect, it should do a better job than what I have now. The Apple display isn't an option because I also need to use it with my work laptop (PC). The Kuycon initially seemed like it might be a good option too, but the fact that it only has a single button (power) and requires a remote just to switch inputs and change settings makes it less desirable to me. There's also the fact that it apparently runs quite hot. The only stupid thing I've seen about the Viewfinity S9 is that it has an external power brick.

Never heard of that website, and that’s a Chinese price, and Samsung products usually sell c.30% off recommended price pretty easily, so I wouldn’t be too worried.

looks like at least one person has managed to get one:

Honestly seems pretty decent as long as the price is right where you are.
