I'm heading out to SF next week. First time there so I'm unsure what to pack. How cool does it get at night? Do I need jeans or am I OK w/ just shorts.

Summer is usually cool in the SF peninsula. Once you get over the bridge into Mill Valley things tend to warm up a bit.

Spring and fall are warmest for San Francisco proper.

Wow. That cold. Glad I asked. I'll have to dust off my fall clothes.

Could be warmer (upper 70s) near the tail end of next week, but generally expect to have highs in the mid 60s and lows in the mid 50s this time of year with a fair amount of fog. If you've venturing out of the city away from the coast, it will almost certainly be a good deal warmer.

Dressing in layers is a good idea. SF weather is kinda tricky and unpredictable - could be a simple matter of what sound of town you are on :p Most definitely have a jacket, sweatshirt or whatever at all times - don't need your winter coat but it definitely can get on the cool side.

Have fun! :)

Layers. I usually wear a long-sleeved dress shirt and a light jacket and I'm just fine day or night, unless the wind is really kicking.

And yeah, the weather does vary depending on where you are in the city. There is often a 10-15 degree difference between The Mission and the Outer Sunset.

As said above, The City can be chilly in July and August, but just a few miles inland it can be triple digits hot.

Luckily, you're nearly always within walking distance of a bar, saloon, grill, restaurant or tavern to fortify oneself. For instance, the Buena Vista (home of the Irish Coffee) is a few steps away from Ghiradelli and a few more away from the Cannery . . .
