Hi,

OK, so they've updated the Mac Pro. Kinda. I think I was hoping that they'd really REALLY update it . . . you know, maybe redesign the case, maybe BTO non-incredibly-obsolete graphics cards . . . but I suppose that was expecting too much.

I'm considering getting a new Penryn-based MP, and I wonder if anyone can advise on the SAS vs. SATA question. I realize that the drives Apple offers (or the drive; at current, it seems there's a single SAS drive available) are 15,000 RPM drives and so will have nice quick access speeds and what not.

But, does SAS justify the expense? $700ish for the card, and then the drives are pricier. Are there compatible 3rd-party SAS drives available that I can just plop in the slots and have super fast HDs?

If it's simply a question of faster throughput, then I would imagine that if I'm doing a lot of disk-based manipulations, the SAS might give a performance edge. I just can't recall if there are things that make SCSI "better" than ATA, or just different . . . ?

Thanks in advance for your advice, or for pointing me to the right source of information,

Stuart
