SO I got my brand new 6G/6G 17 inch Macbook Pro today and installed my OWC 8GB RAM upgrade, installed my vertex 3 max iops 120gb ssd inthe HD slot and used the OWC Optibay Bracket to install a second SATA 3 ssd (OWC MERCURY 6) in the optical drive area
I had read about previous issues so I was expecting what happened
Could not boot at all from optibay.
I got a grey screen with the apple logo and a neverending loading circle beneath it
Since i was expecting this, my vertex 3 was bootable too so i booted from that.
going into the OS, i noticed that SLeopard was seeing my Optibay SSD but when i tried engaging it into tasks as simple as opening a folder, it would take forever. Eventually it kept crashing my system and I concluded that It wasnt gonna work
I took it in to apple and asked them to runa diagnostic.
Everything was ok, so i asked them to tell me if the sata connector cable for the optical drive supports sata 3
I figured since the opti drive is sata 1, the board may be capable of sata 3 but the cable that comes with the macbook may not... They said they could not hel me with the matter since they do not condone putting a hard drive in the optical drive area.
after arguing with them for a while, I figured they wouldnt help me out and left.
My question to you guys is..Is it possible that all the issues people have with SATA 3 in the optibay drive area are because the sata cable doesnt support sata 3 ? And if so, is there any 3rd party manufacturer that makes a replacement for that, thus enabling sata 3 capability?
This is just speculation from someone who is not an expert or computer engineer. Im just trying to figure it out
Cheers
