I've got a number of FW external hard drive enclosures that are parallel ATA (IDE) inside and currently have drives ranging in size from 120 Gb to 300 Gb. I'd really like to start upgrading the drives enclosed to larger drives -- either 750 Gb or above. Once you reach 750 Gb though, there are only a few options for ATA drives, and they're about $25-$30 more expensive at least.
I'm wondering if it might be practical to purchase SATA drives, and use some kind of SATA->ATA adapter within the enclosure. I haven't had luck finding such a thing on the web that seems guaranteed to work within the small confines of an enclosure, or even if it will work well at all.
Do any of you have experience using this kind of an adapter from within an external enclosure, or know of where I should pick one up if it's even practical?
Thanks.
