I know sata III ssds are a mixed bag of results, but what about hdds? all the sata II hdds on the market are refurbished or exorbitant prices that ive found.

also does anyone know any good S.M.A.R.T hard drive tools for ppc?

SATA III hard drives on the native SATA bus in G5s can be just as problematic as SSDs. If possible, avoid them. If the hard drive has a jumper on it to force SATA II or I mode, set it to the lowest mode for best results. Also, note the limitations of drives larger than 2TB. They cannot be used as a boot drive in PowerPC Macs.

I have had good luck with Western Digital drives being jumped down to SATA I speed. Don't even bother with SATA III SSDs, it will be a waste of money and time.
