Recently i decided i would like to build my own external case of an old drive enclosure that essentially fit 2 3.5" SATA drives and a multi-card reader in one box to save desk space.

I have one enlcosure i could pillage for the board and was wandering if anybody knew of a place i could get a 2nd board alone rather than paying full price for a new enclosure and throwing out the case itself.

Or if anybody else has already doen this, how well did it work out for you?

Just do a Google search for "USB bridge board" and you will find plenty of suppliers of the raw boards to fit just about every need.
