Any word on a satellite messaging API? I’ve a low-data app that would greatly benefit from satellite connectivity.

No, and I don't think there will be until they've sorted out the charging / payment model. It's one thing to make it free to use (albeit for a limited period) for emergency services and iMessage but if/when developers use it for apps it's going to significantly increase data usage of the service across all customers, so there will have to be some charging mechanism implemented - whether the developer is charged or the end user (or both) or something else such as it being included in iCloud+, I am not sure.

Unfortunately right now it’s only contacting emergency services, roadside services, and now iMessage/RCS, all of which is contained within messaging. They do let you share your find my location with friends, so there’s hope that it will extend beyond messaging.
