After I download something and put it where I want it to go, do I have to save the download or can I get rid of it?

What do you mean? What kind of download are you talking about? If you download a file and move it where you want it, getting rid of it will defeat the purpose of downloading it. Can you provide more information?

I guess what I'm talking about is the download installer. Let's say I download a game. I hit the icon and it tells me to drag it to my application folder. The game is now in my application folder. The icon for the installer is still in my download file. If i hit it again, it tells me to drag it to my application folder. The game is already in my application folder. Do I need to save the installer?

No, you don't.

You can delete it by moving it from the Downloads folder (Home>Downloads) to the trash can, or keep it someplace else by just dragging it to another folder.
