Recently moved from AT&T to Verizon and I have ported my main number. I have one more number I would like to save but not have it as an active line.

What is the best way to keep my number but not pay a monthly line fee?

You can probably see if you can port it to Google Voice or perhaps something else similar like Sideline.
 
Google Voice may have a porting fee but after that there's no monthly charge and calls via GV in the US are free, as is SMS. Pretty good feature set including 1 cent per minute calls to most of the rest of the world.
