Title is totally wrong. Should be along the lines of "Save 4.1 to keep your untethered JB..." because that's what you are instructed to do.

No, you're totally wrong.

Check the iphone-dev blog. In order to guarantee an untethered 4.2.1 you need your 4.1 SHSH blobs.

I just went to save my SHSH blobs in Tiny Umbrella and it isn't working... I hit "Save SHSH" but all it says above the loading bar is "This device is connected...". I even updated the software. Any ideas?

Think again. Saving your SHSH blobs only ensures you can downgrade. It has nothing to do with tethered/untethered jailbreaks.

[EDIT] Strike the above.

I just read that. I wonder what's cookin'.

Redsnow (I think) can cook a custom firmware 4.1 that updates your phone with 4.2.1.
Itunes 'thinks' you're restoring to 4.1.

do i really need to save it now? can i not just do it with TU at a later date?

You can only save 4.1 while Apple is signing it; that could stop at any time now that 4.2 is out. Use TU right away and at least save to your computer if you don't already have blobs for 4.1.

If Cydia already has them for your current device, you're fine. If they don't, or you don't know for certain, it's best to save it now just in case. Cydia is down right now, so you can't check with that directly.

My sister just bought a new iP4. Haven't jailbroke it yet because I am waiting for the 4.2.1 jailbreak. So...do I have to save her SHSH blob? And if yes, do I need to jailbreak her on 4.1 first?

No, just plug her iphone on the computer and run tinyumbrella.
It will save her 4.1 shsh's so if you need to JB on 4.2 you will have an untethered JB.
Everyone should hurry and do this right away, not sure how long the window will stay open.

Ahh..ok just did.

What about the SHSHs of my other sibling's already jailbroken phones? Should Cydia already have saved them automatically?

To be safe, save / request then from Cydia. That way, you have a copy and Cydia will 100% have too.

Do I have to mess around with SHSH blobs if I don't care about having an unlocked phone? This is all rather confusing me, I'm not even sure how to save these SHSH things.

if you care about being Jailbroken u should. There's a few tuts on iclarified about saving your blobs with Umbrella app.

Do people seriously need tutorials on running a program, plugging their idevice in and hitting 1 button?

Yes. This is the era of logging onto macrumors, creating a forum account, and posting on the forums with a question that can be asked of Google and the top response contains the answer (and links). [Note: this behavior not restricted to just this scenario.]
