Saving contacts to my iPhone

I use my gmail to exchange contacts and calendar and so on. Apparently though, there are limitations to google's contacts (relationships choices, only three. Can't add contacts as father, mother, brother, sister, cousin, etc... only manager, assistant, and spouse.)

Someone mentioned I should use iCloud instead, then I will be presented with all options, but iCloud is a battery sucking monster. Although I am considering the option of using the manual sync instead of automatic.

However, for the meantime, I'd like to save my contacts to my iPhone, how do I go about doing so?
