Saving DVD's to iMac

Only moved to Mac's last October so forgive me if this sounds stupid, but god, I'm glad I did!
I've got an iMac and want to know why I can't simple insert a DVD (a purchased one from my son's school) and save it to the Mac's hard drive to play as and when or play through my TV using Apple TV. It opens the iMac's DVD player and it plays it, but I can't find a way of saving it to the Mac's hard drive. I'd also like to be able to copy it to my iPad. Any ideas?

Follow this procedure and you will be loading in ALL of your DVDs before too long. I know it seems complicated, but it's the easiest way to jump right in and save DVD content for AppleTV.
