I just converted a Blu-Ray of Saving Private Ryan via Handbrake on the ATV3 setting, and it turned out to be 26.5 GB. That seems pretty huge, and so I'm trying to figure out whether there was some sort of conversion inefficiency or whether it really is just large because of the feature's length (almost 3 hours) and artifacts such as rain. The movie 300 is 11 GB, and is the second largest of perhaps ten. Others are between 5 and 10. Thoughts?

Can you compress it again in handbrake using the mp4 settings on high quality? That should get you down to between 5-6GB.

What do you mean "high quality"?

I'm thinking it's just the nature of this movie.

The high quality setting on handbrake should retain the bluray quality and reduce the file size. I had the same thing happen with the avengers so I reencoded and brought it down to 4gb without losing much quality at all.

Where is this setting located?

Sorry, crappy google pic. You're looking for "high profile"

Oh, okay. So those are lower-quality settings. I'll keep that in mind if I run out of room, thanks. It does appear the large filesize is just due to the film, and not some sort of error.

its kinda normal for some films, it tends to happen on films that are full 16:9 image in size, and or particularly grainy. it also doesn't help i dont think if the film has lots of fast pace imagery/action, and a sound-packed score/effects.

my handbrake churned out similar once,

i did spr, and got it down to 18gb on atv3 setting at 22 on the quality marker.

The aTV3 preset was designed to give the best quality with the smallest file size. High quality, not being similarly designed, will give you smaller file sizes but with a resultant loss of quality. That said, whether you personally can detect that quality loss is dependent on a lot of factors, such as screen size, viewing distance, etc. So it really comes down to your personal preferences and storage limitations.

I can tell you that, for me, using the aTV3 preset, The Hurt Locker came out to 22GB and For a Few Dollars More was 18GB (both only 2h 11m long). If you simply must have a smaller file size, I would suggest using the aTV3 preset and lowering the quality setting a bit (maybe 22). Often with BR's you can get away with that with minimal quality loss.

Lots of detail (rain, grain, action, etc) or dark areas can increase the file size as the aTV3 preset will try to accurately encode every little detail...right down to the grain in the film.

"High Profile" is just a preset for a different H.264 profile that uses more advanced compression tools, which may result in slightly smaller files. However, the current ATV3 profile uses almost the same tools (the only difference being a more complex algorithm for adaptive B-frames), so this won't make much of a difference. For best compatibility you should stick with the ATV3 profile.

The easiest ways to reduce the file size are to reduce the video resolution and/or the video quality. You could also experiment with the video de-noise filter (what makes Saving Private Ryan hard to compress is the heavy grain).
