i wanted to setup my canon mp620 printer to work w/ my 2011 mbp. i cant get my printer to show up on my network. i think i need to somehow copy my network settings to a usb drive. how do i do that in mac?

Did you install the right printer driver on your Mac? You likely just need the Canon MP620 network driver and it should show up. Though you also need to have the printer plugged into your network.

I don't think I've ever heard of copying network settings before (as files), much rather what difference putting them on a USB stick to plug into your printer would do.
 
Temporarily connect to the printer's USB port then do a Software Update to get the latest Canon OS X drivers. Then go back to the regular network setup and open System Preferences->Printers ans click the + to add the networked printer.
