I remember using scanner (actually, it was AIO printer) that could recognize pictures in the scan and split them into separate files (with unbelievable precision). The problem is it wasn't my device and I cannot remember even the manufacturer.

Does anybody know of any scanner or AIO printer with such capabilities?

I'm not sure if it does exactly as you wish, but it would be worth looking at the Epson Perfection Vxxx Photo Scanners.
I bought the V550 to scan old wedding negatives, it's a great scanner.
