Scanning pdf files from Canon MX850

I am having all sorts of problems scanning documents into a PDF file from my canon MX850. If I use a low scanning resolution, I end up with an unreadable document, but when I increase the resolution, I have a document that is way to big to email. I am talking about scanning documents that are about 40 pages in length. When I tried compressing the files, it seemed to also affect the image quality. Am I out of luck with this printer?
