OK, so I have messed around with XCODE and have created a couple of applications and run the on the simulator. I've paid my $99 fee to be able to upload my apps to my phone and eventually to the store. So far so good.

Now I read about what I need to do to "provision" my iPhone so I can try the app on it. The warnings are scaring the life out of me. Something about forever locking my phone into a development mode.

Does that mean I can no longer use the normal "release" firmware on it?
Does it mean that I can't use it as my personal iPhone (telephone, data, etc.)?

Those questions have prevented me from moving any further. I don't want to spend another $1800 on a phone and 2 year contract just to try a few applications out.
