This is my first post on MacRumors (so go easy, please). I live overseas and have a jailbroken, unlocked iPhone 3G still running the 3.0 OS (Baseband 4.26.08). Certain apps no longer work because they require an updated firmware. Performance, in general, is starting to plummet, so I figured it's time to update. I've read through several websites but can't seem to find a straight answer. As I understand it, I can't upgrade all the way to 4.1 without messing up the baseband (is that right?). Am I then limited to upgrading to 3.0.1? If this is not correct, then is upgrading simply a matter of downloading the desired OS version and following the directions? I found jav6454's list of available downloads, but can I really just select, for example, the link to 4.0.0 Firmware & 05.13.04 Baseband and install it without screwing up my phone?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
