Land of the Free-Waiting for Term Limits
Hey all,

Need some pointers who have purchased renters insurance for college dorms.

My son will be attending as a freshman, and he has items I want covered. For instance: iphone, MBP, a fixie bike, clothes, monitor etc.
I know my homeowners will cover, however my deductible is 1k and I don't want a claim for a stolen bike worth 1k.

Now, I have done some investigation on this and have found for 200 a year and a $25. Deductible gives him about 8-10k in coverage for a year- carte blanc. It even covers damage to iPhones, computer. Etc.

Is this coverage to good to be true, or is it legit.

Has anyone purchased such, or even had to file a claim on such a policy?
I am considering this company http://www.collegestudentinsurance.com

Thanks for any guidance, appreciate it.

200 for renters insurance seems kinda high actually

I paid about 125/year for insurance that covered 20k of belongings

Why not go through the same company that gives you your home insurance?

Thanks dukebound,

I am with liberty mutual and they don't offer it; called them first.
Do you recall who you went through? I am not going to pinch penny's on this one, I just want a reputable policy. I like the damage coverage as well.

Thanks

I didn't even realize there was such a thing as college dorm insurance.

Of course, I think there's pretty much everything insurance now, so it's not surprising. Did this even exist in 1993?

Renters insurance has existed for ages.

Get him started with whoever, try calling homeinsurance.com, get a range of quotes on renters ins from legitimate agencies. Let him put in his name. First step to being a big boy.

Mine is through geico

I am unaware how a dorm plan is different than a standard renters policy though.

Yes, I know that...for apartments and houses. Just never occurred to me that dorms would fall under that. I don't see why not...just never heard or thought of it.

Renter's insurance is for anyone who doesn't own the place where they live. That's all.
