So honestly how is the scratch resistance on the base model these days? I had the standard AW4 and surface scratches happened like crazy, still currently use a 5 with sapphire screen and have banged it everywhere it seems and the glass still looks likes like brand new.

How are the newer generation watches (minus the sapphire screen models) for scrach resistance?

You’re not going to find an equivalent to sapphire. I would go with another sapphire watch if you’re thinking about upgrading.

No-one knows what the new model base versions will be like as it is a new coating, Apple are claiming to be more scratch resistant than before (no comparison to sapphire). From my reading online which I know is a bit biased, it seems like people are complaining more about the last couple of year's models, probably because the screens are more rounded near the edge of the casing / larger surface area, so more opportunity to be scratched.
