Hey all!
I currently have a S8 AW 45mm, looking to upgrade to the S11. I was thinking the jet black, but now I'm leaning towards the space grey because I'm worried about the jet black scratching? Anyone with a day 1 S10 have any feedback?
I'm also not sure about the jet black with some lighter coloured bands like the peony braided loop, I feel like it would clash a lot? Any thoughts?

I've had the S10 42mm Jet Black since day 1 and not a single mark on it. I do look after my gear though and it isn't in any harsh environment. It holds up really well in my experience.

I found the jet black attracts smudges all the time because of the glossy surface. I too am looking at the space grey as a result.

I have been having this recurring issue with my S10 sports watch. This has already been replaced twice by Apple.

I cannot say whether this is any better on the S11.

Yuck —-^ I have the same issue, and I’ve seen so many pictures like it on other forums. So that as much as I do prefer black or at least dark colors, I went with “space gray” for s11 even though it’s not even that dark at all, since it seems too risky to roll the dice regarding whether I’ll be one of the lucky majority or the small but seemingly not so small minority that gets this crappy issue happen AGAIN.

May I ask when you say “replaced twice by Apple” already… how did that work? i.e. they acknowledged it being their doing and replaced it for you for free or for a fee, or ___?___. … because I did read reports here on MR and elsewhere that people have got theirs fixed/replaced, but those reports are quite rare compared to the more common ones, like my own experience at two different Apple stores, of being rejected flat-out by the “cosmetic” word which they use to just shut me down no matter how i may politely try to explain the issue and request some assistance or their manager, etc.

I made a thread / poll to try to gauge how frequent this is a couple months ago, here, it seems like about 20+ have no problem at all and only a few do. which of course is not a huge data set but… eh. it is a bummer to keep reading reports of this happening. so if you want to be safe, avoid the jet black.

what makes it so bad to me is how Apple employees claim it’s cosmetic damage and that even if I had Apple Care, they wouldn’t fix it, no matter what. so basically that means I have 14 days to return it, or I’m stuck with it despite the “1 year warranty” for other issues, it really makes you feel handcuffed, trapped when they won’t acknowledge such an issue and meanwhile there are tons of posts about it online, and all of them or most of them seem to track together about it happening about 6 months after purchase. :-/

I have a few minor micro scratches on the body, nothing unusual. The real problem is the area between the screen and the bezel. It has several small chips, like the finish is wearing off. I love the look of it, but it will never stay looking pristine. I’m looking at space gray as well for that reason.

I have a few minor scratches on the face, but nothing on the sides/back. The glossy finish on it seems to be really good at preventing scratches.

My Series 10 Apple Watch is still covered by AppleCare, so I made an appointment with the Apple Store and brought it in some time back. The employee there took it in, and a replacement was shipped to me a week later. However, it wouldn't be long before I encountered the same issue. Rinse and repeat (made another appointment in June, brought it to the Apple Store, they had it replaced within a few days).

Issue was stated as physical damage, but there was no admission of fault anywhere. I was not required to make any payment either. It does seem like failure / success depends partly on the person attending to you, and whether they are feeling "generous" on that day or not, because I have been turned away in the past (for other products) as well.

My 1-year warranty will expire on 20 Sep. If I want, I will have to bring it in by this Saturday to (hopefully) have it replaced one more time, but I suppose the issue will ultimately still come back. It's bewildering that I put my previous Series 5 through rougher treatment (worked out more often before I recently started developing knee issues) and it's no worse for wear.

And bugger - no appointment slots are available for this Friday and Saturday (I suspect it's all hands on deck for iPhone launch), and it will be a particularly busy week for me as well. You know what - I will put in an appointment for Tuesday evening first, and see how things go on that day. o_O

Oof, that is good to hear you were successful in getting it replaced (and twice!) but even then, what a hassle to have to do that in the first place. Thank you for sharing.

Yes it seems there can be some luck or chance involved re: the person helping you is nice or not, and despite what they told me about Apple Care not covering it, perhaps it helps a lot to have it … like we are basically bribing them or showing them “see? I not only pay tons of money for the devices upfront, I also support the Great Apple with monthly insurance payment tributes, for all my devices. please help me!”

Good luck with your appointment for the same issue a 3rd time!
