screen brightness problem at macbook

hey,
i've been having this problem for a couple of days and since i'm not a very experienced user, i couldn't find what to do.
the problem is, whether i plug in my macbook or not, it stays at the minimum screen brightness level. i use it plugged in generally, but now there is no difference in the brightness and it's very tiring to use it this way. the energy saver options look ok, i haven't changed anything from the custom settings.
hope someone knows what to do.

Can't you turn the brightness up on the keyboard or in System Preferences?

god, i feel like an idiot
see, since i haven't turned the brightness off manually by F1, i was looking for something complicated, i don't know what happened there but anyways, all clear now.
