I had my 2019 iMac 24 inch diagnosed for a black screen. The screen died and it's gonna cost me $800 for repairs. I just bought the thing 4 months ago used. The guy who looked at it thinks the screen has been off once as the corner is a little loose. I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth repairing, sell the parts or take it out back and use my 12 gauge on it. Second question is how do you get the data off it. I don't need it, just need it wiped clean if possible.

TIA

I believe the 2019 iMac was 21" or 27", not 24".

If you're handy at all, it's not a big deal to replace the screen yourself; there are plenty of how-to's on the net and I've opened my machines a number of times in the old days (last year) when you could upgrade the innards. The biggest problem is finding a replacement screen, as Apple does not yet sell their parts. There are some 3rd party screens, I have no idea as to quality, such as these: https://www.amazon.com/WARWOLFTEAM-...2019+imac+27+lcd+screen&qid=1639362418&sr=8-4., or https://www.ebay.com/itm/164720979798?hash=item265a22af56:g:EWEAAOSwqMZhZrk4

I wonder if "the guy" is at an Apple store or authorized service center, as if he's not, he's probably either installing a used screen or one of the third party ones. Nothing wrong with a used screen, it either works ok right away or doesn't.

Does it sound like the iMac is booting? Do you have any type of external monitor (or borrow one) that you can connect to use instead of the internal display? If so then you can delete your data.

I'll have to check the box and date on this one. I went through the Youtube instructions and will attempt to open it tomorrow. Thx

Yes, it does boot up. I was told at the time that I couldn't hook it up to a separate monitor. I am going to attempt to remove the screen I have an hopefully find a replacement. Thx

Well, after taking my screen off and breaking a few edges etc, I called down to Simply Mac store here locally and asked if I can buy a new screen. I had already taken this unit down to them for diagnostics. They were the ones telling me the screen was bad. They had also told me that the unit was out of warranty. WTF, now they tell me I do have warranty and I shouldn't take it apart. Ya, the horse left the barn on that one. Now my warranty is void. Wonderful. Are the screens on Amazon good? BTW, the screen measures 24" however the serial number says its a 21.5

Unless you can get a new display panel CHEAP (I reckon less than 400), I wouldn't bother fixing this.

Put the money towards something new.
Perhaps you could sell the old one for parts...

Ya, I went back to the Simply Mac store and they said my iMac was again not under warranty. (by a month or two). now why the hell did they tell me on the phone it was under warranty. The very guy who looked at the computer the first time now asked me why I took off the screen and broke. Really, you don't remember me from last week. He now says because I may not have taken it apart correctly he'd have to do a diagnostics on it. It would then cost my $100 additional for that. Screw that, I picked up both pieces and walked out. Thanks guys for your help. Anyone need parts from a 2020 21.5 iMac? Anyone know how to wipe HD clean that is currently in the iMac .
