Hello all.

Not a complain or a rant just a little announcement to all who use always on display.

Last night I noticed some screen burn on my display when viewing in the dark. I have a line across the top part of the display where the widgets are and slight discolouration on the display in other areas.

I have since turned always on display off. I think because the always on display doesn't function like the normal (better ones) AOD like on a Samsung where it shifts the pixels every min or so it may cause the issue.

Hopefully apple can patch its behaviour. If it can happen to mine it may happen to yours as I have been using always on since I got the phone on launch day.

Update: yes I know it may not be burn in now my sincere apologies for offending anyone here who has worked in the display industry since the early 70s.

It could just be temporary image retention so I’d wait and see what happens. Like you I turned off AOD as it drains my battery. Apple pushed this out half-baked so we will see it they add more to it in upcoming updates.

Its been like it for a few days mate I was waiting too.

Will see if it stops when after a few days. But I do agree it is not a great implementation at all just apple trying to be different when it doesn't need to be.

It can disappear and only LCDs can never be fixed with burn-in as bizarre as that sounds. I got a high end plasma TV from my sister that had bad burn in from being left on a certain news channel. However even that disappeared with time so keep your fingers crossed as I’m most definitely interested in what happens on your phone.

This seems contradictory, can you clarify the timeline of events?

Sure. I noticed the issue a few days ago on my display only in dark lit situations and with black backgrounds. Thought nothing of it but last night as i was watching a video which was primary set in a dark setting i noticed it even more and some other areas of the display were discoloured.

Which is why i made the thread as the line where it is prominent is where the widgets are under the clock when the AOD is on.

Sorry for the confusion.

Ah interesting. Thanks for the tip will see if I notice it in the next few days.

Doesn't bother me too much as its not present at all in bright sunlight or when I turn the display brightness up. Gone are the days when a chip on the side or a scratch on the screen bothered me. Man I think I have matured!

I think when I upgrade next year, unless Apple tones down AoD, I’ll immediately turn off for the benefits to battery life. Screen burn in wasn’t even a consideration so thanks for the post for at least bringing some awareness to that possible issue as well.

I've never heard of burn-in happening that fast on any device, is it possible to document your issue? That's a pretty big issue.
The thing is I don't know if it was like that when I bought it and I've only noticed it now. Possibility that it was like that out the box.

No worries. I think with how apple has implemented it its going to be an issue as the pixels are not shifting. Apple says they don't need to do that but I could cause issues later down the line.

On my Samsung, which in my opinion, has the best AOD shifts the pixels and moves the clock around so the issue does not happen.

Everything you watched became a breaking news story with headline bar and chiron overlays

I’d very much like to see a pic if you don’t mind

And I’d definitely return it ,and disable aod on the new unit

Good luck

I will try and get one but it is tricky to capture but tonight I will see if I can take a pic and post it.

I am pass the return period but it doesn't bother me too much but rather warn others in case it starts becoming an issue.

Burn-in is covered by Apple's warranty. You can take it to them and they'll replace the device/screen, even without AC+.

I checked my screen as I played with AOD a lot in the last week. Nothing, and yes one or two weeks seems to be really fast. I still think it’s temporary but the OP
should keep it for a while just to see if it is temporary rather than just return it and leave everyone wondering about their own phone.

Keep it for the team for another week - be a team player!
