Screen capture makes click noise but no file saved

I am running OS X 10.7.5 and have in the past been able to use screen capture with no problems.

I needed to do a screen capture today and while I can get the capture to seemingly work i.e. make the shutter noise but there is no sign of a screen shot file anywhere to be seen.

I have tried looking for hidden files and loaded MainMenu to repair pemissions. I even searched the entire disk and cannot find a thing.
