I want to capture selections on my screen and add comments. Is there a program out there that will allow me to do that? I don't like the "grab it" program because it saves the captured file in a Tiff format instead of a Jpeg format. Any leads on a decent program?

Thanks

Adam

You can change the format, but I forget how.

Here's how to change the default file format that the Grab application uses (link):

Choose any of the following lines and paste it in your Terminal window and press the return key.

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type png
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type pdf
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type tif
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type psd

I like it to save the files as PNG's, but everybody has their favorite preference.

Can you explain this more to me? I am not sure how to do this.

Open Terminal

Choose any of the following lines and paste it in your Terminal window and press the return key.

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type png
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type pdf
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type tif
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type psd

Choose the one you want. Copy and paste into Terminal.

I tried opening the terminal window and pasting one of the lines and hit enter. When i go to capture, it still captures in tiff. I want JPG. What do you think I am doing wrong? I have a Mac PRO with the latest leopard system.

I use grab, put the tiff formatted screenie into my iPhoto, the export a jpeg.

How are you taking screenshots? Are you using Cmd-Shift-3/4 or the separate Grab app? I think the Terminal commands only work for the built-in key sequences.
