Screen completely black after waking Mac up

I've noticed these past 2-3 months if i leave my computer open and it puts itself to sleep when i click on my mouse pad to log back in the computer screen stays completely black until i move the cursor around. At that point pixel by pixel the screen will reappear as if i am using the eraser tool from MS Paint. Does anyone have any idea why it does this or how i can resolve it? Its a 2010 Mac Book pro
